It appears the issue is related to the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, which was evidently installed with a driver update around the first week of April. Both machines could access each other's shared folders (shared using "advanced sharing", that is) until my internet service provider upgraded their modem over the week-end. If the IP address and subnet mask have been entered manually, make sure the subnet mask matches that of the Windows 7 machine by following the same step on W7.
